The Evolution of VoIP

Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, has come a long way. The technology was developed in the mid-1990s, initially used to try to circumvent the high costs of long distance telephone calls. A company called VocalTec created the InternetPhone, which allowed calls to be made online, using speakers and a microphone. That company kept expanding their technology, introducing computer to telephone and telephone to telephone calls over the internet. The idea slowly caught on. Eventually, major companies started including VoIP switching software as part of their equipment.

With technology and call quality improving, consumers themselves started to realize the benefits. This bolstered even more improvements in the technology.

Just a few short years after the introduction of the InternetPhone, the government started regulating VoIP calls. Internet telephone service providers began to come out of the woodwork.

Skype and VoIP

The introduction of Skype in 2003 was a major milestone for VoIP. Arguably one of the best-known calling platforms, Skype managed to attract a lot of people because all of their computer-to-computer services were free.

When they added video capability a few years later, the company experienced yet another boom. Huge numbers of people saw the benefits very clearly. As a result, VoIP became much more highly used and a more accessible technology.

With that success underway, even the most reluctant companies started to see the benefits. With more full-service providers selling their services, businesses were able to customize calling packages that worked well with their existing technology and their business operations. From mobile connectivity to features like call forwarding, VoIP’s capabilities quickly surpassed what a traditional phone could do.

VoIP Today and Tomorrow

In its current iteration, VoIP is heavily used by both personal users and corporations. It plays a significant role in communications around the world. Its speed, quality, and ease of access is a far cry from those early days in the 1990s. Many people and many companies rely on it every single day.

The evolution continues, as people see the benefits and potential for this technology. Anything that makes communication easy, inexpensive, and accessible is attractive to people around the world. Internet telephone systems filled a lot of gaps for people who would otherwise have difficulty making calls and sending messages.

Most recently, the technology has been booming in places where there are many overseas workers, who want to connect with their families back home, and who need to stay in touch with business contacts.
